Deal: No segregation in Mea Shearim

To contact us Click HERE

End to exclusion of women on Mea Shearim sidewalks? The Toldot Aharon Hasidic dynasty has pledged not to send ushers to the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood's streets to impose modesty rules during the holiday of Sukkot, and not to enforce gender segregation as it has done in previous years.

In discussions held between senior haredi community members and representatives of the police and Jerusalem Municipality, the parties agreed that a safety fence would be set up to maintain order during the Simchat Beit Hashoeivah celebrations held in the area on the intermediate days of Sukkot – but not to impose segregation.

The Jerusalem Police updated Jerusalem Council Member Rachel Azaria on the developments, following her petition to the High Court of Justice against the gender segregation on the neighborhood's main street in past years and the judges' ruling that authorities must prevent this situation.

"There will be no separation between men and women," the police stated in a letter to Azaria's lawyer, Attorney Dr. Aviad Hacohen. "The Israel Police and Jerusalem Municipality will have representatives in the area to guarantee that the details of the agreement are being upheld."

The parties agreed on the following outline, according to the police: "The road and sidewalks will be open to the entire public (apart from an 8-meter section at the exit from a yeshiva); there will be no ushers during the event; a 2.2-meter (7.2 feet) fence will be set up on the southern side of the road.

"The fence will be built for safety purposes only. It will not be covered with jute cloth or any other cover preventing or blocking the view from both sides of the fence…

"The event will be held between 9 pm-12:30 am. At the end of the event the fence will be dismantled, and reinstalled starting 8 pm the next day."

Attorney Hacohen welcomed the decision. "We hope the police keep their promise to enforce the law, so that Jerusalem can restore its role as the capital of all its residents, both men and women, allowing them to rejoice together in the city streets during the Sukkot holiday."

Terrorism scare as fishermen spotted near JFK when PM Netanyahu arrived for flight home

A terrorism scare gripped JFK Airport last night when intruders were spotted near airport grounds just as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived for his flight back home — but the trespassers turned out to be fishermen, law-enforcement sources said.

The alert was sounded at around 9 p.m., causing a massive air and water search of the airport perimeter by the NYPD, the Port Authority and other agencies.

At one point in the confusion, a message was broadcast that a Secret Service member was missing. The report proved to be false

By 10 p.m. it was determined that four fishermen had taken a boat into an area on the west side of JFK called Hamilton Beach, a restricted part of the airport’s property, sources said.

The quartet had gotten to within half a mile of Netanyahu’s plane, the sources said.

Had they been terrorists, they were in position to do real damage, the sources said.

“It’s another major breach of security,” said one law-enforcement source. “Luckily they were only fishermen and not terrorists.”

The men, whose identities were not released, were charged with trespassing.

In August, a stranded jet-skier got through the airport’s $100 million security net when his watercraft broke down.

He hopped a fence, walked across two runways and flagged down some workers in a building inside the airport.

DEADLY Dutchman Joran Van Der Sloot is rubbing salt in the already deep wounds by launching an astonishing $10 million lawsuit against his victim's father.
The shameless accused killer, who allgedly admitted to cops that he killed Peruvian student Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room is claiming his human rights were violated when he was extradited from Peru to Chile, to face murder charges.
He reportedly confessed to killing the 21-year-old after he found her reading about the Natalee Holloway case on his laptop.
He has long been prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of the pretty American teenager, who vanished on the small Caribbean island of Aruba where she was celebrating her graduation.
Peruvian prosecutors however maintain that he planned to kill Flores, so he could rob her.
Now according to El Commercio he's claiming his arrest in Chile and subsequent extradition to Peru was a violation of human rights.
According to the Lima daily El Comercio, van der Sloot claims there was pressure from Peru's then-President Alan García Pérez on the Chilean government to extradite after he was arrested in Arica, Chile shortly after Flores was killed.
Several other Peruvian officials are named in the lawsuit, along with the murdered girl's father, Ricardo Flores.
It's not the first time the Van der Sloot has raised the same issues of due process and police irregularities, but all his claims that have been dismissed by Peruvian courts.
Peruvian prosecutors are seeking a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for van der Sloot.

LEDE
A TWISTED killer snapped pictures of his young victims before running errands with the female corpse in the trunk of his car.
Craig Lede allegedly beat Dana Nelson, 28, and John Ketsemidis, 29, over a drug debt of just $40.
It's thought all three were hooked on prescription drugs, which were linked to a pill clinic which has recently closed.
Lede told cops he killed the couple because he was tired of being "screwed about" over a small debt, so he'd killed the pair.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis told Bay News 9 that Ketsemidis and Nelson had gone to Lede’s home to talk about their debt when he attacked them with a bat.
According to the arrest warrant: "Once the victims were down and helpless, the defendant struck them in the head and upper body several times causing eventual death."
After taking the sick pictures, he stuffed Nelson's body into the trunk of her boyfriend's car and went to Ketsemidis' parents home where he demanded $40.
They refused to hand over the cash and called cops, when they saw he was driving his son's car.
After finding the bodies, police said that Lede confessed to the double murder.Sheriff Nienhuis added: "Although we cannot link this heinous and senseless crime directly to the abuse of prescription drugs, there is little doubt that it significantly contributed to the deaths of these two young people.
"This is a perfect example that prescription drug abuse is not a victimless or a non-violent crime."

THEY say the first cut is the deepest but for Virginia Valdez' husband it was also the most painful - as she tried to cut off his penis with a pair of scissors.
It's unclear how successful the 69-year-old was with her eye-watering attack, but it's believed that she didn't do a Bobbit and completely sever her husbands member.
Her spouse 62, who's name has not been released called cops late Saturday and told them of the attack and when officers arrived they found him bleeding profusely and the bloody weapon nearby.
“They were more heavy duty than the standard office scissors,”  Palm Springs Police Sgt. Kyle Stjerne told the Herald Sun, adding that they resembled poultry shears.
He added that the couple had been married for 32 years and the cause of Saturday’s fight remains under investigation.
He explained: “It was just a long-standing marital dispute, and we are not sure what caused her to do it."
Valdez was arrested on suspicion of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and spousal abuse.
Online jail records say she was released Sunday and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Police say the man was treated at a hospital for injuries in the penis area and released.

Azerbaijanis jailed for Jewish school murder plot

BAKU, Azerbaijan  — Three people have been convicted of plotting to kill teachers at a Jewish school in Azerbaijan.
A court in the capital Baku on Thursday found plot ringleader Rasim Aliyev and two other Azerbaijani citizens guilty of plotting the assassination of public officials and gun-smuggling. Aliyev was given a 14-year sentence while the others received 13 and eight years.
Investigators said Aliyev was hired to carry out the killings in Baku by an individual linked to security services in neighboring Iran.
Aliyev said in a televised confession that the attack was to be a reprisal against Israel for the assassination of an Iranian nuclear physicist.
Ties between Azerbaijan — which has good relations with Western governments — and Iran have soured substantially over the past year amid mutual accusations of espionage.

Actor Johnny Lewis, known for his role as Kip "Half Sack" Epps in “Sons of Anarchy,” fell to his death Wednesday in a bizarre series of events.
Police are investigating whether the 28-year-old actor may have been under the influence of drugs when he went on a rampage in which he allegedly fought with two men and beat to death an 81-year-old woman who may have rented a room to Lewis. It is believed Lewis died after falling from a roof or balcony.
In the FX drama, Lewis played a hopeful trying to join the outlaw motorcycle club.
His character was killed off at the end of the second season. Early Thursday morning, “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter spoke out on Twitter about Lewis’ death, in which he said the rampage didn’t come as a complete surprise.
"not sure if folks know this yet, but johnny lewis (halfsack) died last night. the sad irony of it happening two days after opie's death is not lost on me. it was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way. i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not. i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it's day or mourning, but it's also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying."
Lewis also appeared in "Boston Public" and "The O.C.. "

3 women shot at Orlando hotels

To contact us Click HERE

ORLANDO, Fla. - Saying it's been "a murderous 12 hours or so in Orange County," Sheriff Jerry Demings addressed a triple shooting that unfolded at two hotels in the tourist district of Orlando and left two women dead.
A third woman was shot and injured in the domestic incident, according to officials, who said the gunman was later found dead after apparently shooting himself while fleeing deputies.
Two 28-year-old women, including the gunman's estranged girlfriend, were shot just before 8 a.m. Thursday at the Quality Suites at 7400 Canada Ave. near International Drive. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the girlfriend worked at the hotel and was behind a counter when she sustained injuries to her upper body and head. It's not known if the other woman was employed at the hotel.
The women, whose names have not been released, were taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital and pronounced dead, deputies said.

The gunman then went to the Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa at 10000 Turkey Lake Road, about 2.5 miles from the other hotel, and shot his estranged girlfriend's 31-year-old friend, Demings said. Deputies initially said the woman was shot and killed but later said she was in critical condition.
Deputies located a car in Pine Hills connected to the gunman, and a brief, slow-speed pursuit ended near Powers Drive and Sunshine Street, Demings said.
"As a deputy was approaching the suspect's car, he observed the individual with what appeared to be a handgun, saw a flash, and the car crashed into tree (and caught fire)," said Demings, who added that the 33-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Demings said deputies served a domestic violence injunction to the man Wednesday night in connection with incidents in Osceola and Orange counties. In one of the cases, the man tried to run over his estranged girlfriend with a vehicle, Demings said.
"It does stem from a relationship gone bad," Demings said. "A child is involved, but the child is in good health."
An investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, a woman working at a Chinese restaurant in Orlando was shot and killed Wednesday night during a robbery.
The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. when a masked gunman stormed into the China Wok restaurant on Silver Star Road near Pine Hills Road. Orange County deputies continue to search for the gunman.

Washington - Senior Aide to Harry Reid Writes About Torah Law After Hours

To contact us Click HERE

WASHINGTON -- Bill Dauster spends his professional life drafting laws for the U.S. Senate. He spends much of his free time studying a very different kind of law - the Torah.
By day, Dauster works as deputy chief of staff for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. But in his free time, he has produced some of the Web's most detailed explication and analysis of the Jewish Bible.
Dauster has written Wikipedia entries for each of the Torah's 54 chapters - or parsha - and he constantly updates them with new information and insight.

"It's like peeling off an onion," Dauster said. "There's always going to be more out there."

It's a process not dissimilar to crafting legislation on Capitol Hill.

Thomas Jones, a senior adviser to Sen. Jim DeMint, attends a weekly Torah study group with Dauster.
"Sometimes the rabbi will be like, 'We're going to look at Exodus 15, verse 3, and talk about that for an hour, and what does that mean?'" Jones said of their study group. "That's what you end up doing up here (at the Senate), is fighting over 'mays' versus 'shalls' and things like that."

The Wikipedia entries are not just simple summaries, but analyses and interpretations informed by years of research.

"This is an impressive scholarly achievement," said Richard Sugarman, a professor of religion and Jewish philosophy at the University of Vermont, of Dauster's Wikipedia oeuvre. "It provides an excellent, comprehensive foundation for studying the parashot (plural of parsha). It presents (a) broad, yet detailed overview. It shows evidence of serious scholarship and erudition. It can be used as a springboard for studying the Torah."

Dauster cites from not just the Torah itself, but also the Talmud, Midrash, Mishnah, and Haftarah, all traditional commentaries or companions to the Torah.

"My wife has been kind enough to let me get several Talmuds, so I have it in four different translations," Dauster said.

The Talmud, often referred to as the oral tradition of the Torah, is a lengthy work, or, as Dauster calls it, "a big enterprise." One of the versions Dauster owns contains 73 encyclopedia-sized volumes.

"All these things accrue," Dauster said of his copious reference material, lamenting that his small home library has been overrun with Torah related books.
Dauster has worked in Washington since 1986, entirely in the Senate except for a stint in 1999 when he served as deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton. He has literally written the book on budget policy in the U.S. Senate - Budget Process Law Annotated. In fact, he's written three versions of it.
Dauster started studying the Torah in the early 1980s and began attending study groups regularly in the 1990s. After reading about Wikipedia in Tom Friedman's book "The World is Flat," he realized that it could be an outlet for some of his knowledge.

Iran test-fires missiles designed to hit warships

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran has test-fired four missiles designed to hit warships during a drill near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian military commander said.
The missiles were fired simultaneously and hit a "big target" the size of a warship, sinking it within 50 seconds, Gen. Ali Fadavi of the powerful Revolutionary Guard was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.
The Fars report late Monday was the first indication of an Iranian military exercise taking place simultaneously and close to US-led joint naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf, including mine-sweeping drills, which got under way last week.   The US Navy claims the maneuvers are not directly aimed at Iran, but the West and its regional allies have made clear they would react against attempts by Tehran to carry out threats to try to close critical Gulf oil shipping lanes in retaliation for tighter sanctions over its disputed nuclear program.
Fadavi did not elaborate on the ongoing Iranian exercise or the type of missiles fired but said the Guard is planning a "massive naval maneuver in the near future" in the strait.
Iran regularly holds maneuvers to upgrade its military readiness as well as test its equipment.

The latest drill comes amid tension over Iran's nuclear program and Israel's suggestion that it might unilaterally strike Iranian nuclear facilities to scuttle what the US and its allies believe are efforts to build an atomic bomb.
Tehran denies it is pursuing such weapons and insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

On Sunday, a senior Guard commander warned that Iran would target US bases in the region in the event of war with Israel. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, claimed no Israeli attack can happen without the support of its most important ally, the United States, making all US military bases a legitimate target.
Iran has in the past also warned that oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the route for a fifth of the world's oil, will be in jeopardy if a war breaks out.
For its part, Israel believes that any attack on Iran would likely unleash retaliation in the form of Iranian missiles as well as rocket attacks by Iranian proxies Hezbollah and Hamas on its northern and southern borders.

Obama: US will 'do what we must' to prevent nuclear Iran

President Obama, speaking to world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, vowed the U.S. "will do what we must" to prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon -- calling this a threat to Israel's existence.
Amid accusations from Republicans, including Mitt Romney, that Obama's policies have not slowed Iran's nuclear march, the president used the U.N. stage to assure the international community that he is serious about preventing that outcome.
"Make no mistake: a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained," Obama said. "It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy.

It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty.

That's why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that's why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

The president reiterated that he wants to resolve the issue "through diplomacy" but the time for doing so "is not unlimited."

Obama has been under fire for, so far, opting not to meet in New York with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose prime area of international concern is Iran's nuclear program. Obama also has not scheduled one-on-one meetings with any world leader at the U.N.

The reference to Iran came toward the end of a speech otherwise devoted to addressing the recent tumult in the Middle East and North Africa, including the murder of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi.
Obama began his address to the General Assembly Tuesday with a tribute to Ambassador Chris Stevens. Recalling Stevens' time serving in the Peace Corps as an English instructor in Morocco, he said Stevens "came to love and respect" the people of the region and carried that commitment throughout his life.

"I tell you this story because Chris Stevens embodied the best of America," Obama said.
The president went on to restate his administration's support for the Arab Spring, calling it a "season of progress."
But he said the recent violence and unrest is indicative of the difficulties along the way. "True democracy -- real freedom -- is hard work," he said.

Obama said leaders in the region are at a critical juncture, and urged them to choose the forces of hope over the forces of intolerance.

"It is time to leave the call of violence and the politics of division behind," Obama said. "On so many issues, we face a choice between the promise of the future, or the prisons of the past. And we cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future."

The president called on world leaders to "marginalize" those that stoke hatred of the West in order to further their own politics.

And he continued to address the anti-Islam film that is blamed for many of the recent demonstrations against U.S. diplomatic posts -- though that film may not have played much of a role in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya. While the president did not describe that attack as terrorism Tuesday, Romney did in a separate speech to the Clinton Global Initiative conference.
Obama stressed that while he condemns the "crude and disgusting" video, America maintains the right to free speech.

"And on this we must agree: There is no speech that justifies mindless violence," Obama said.

"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy," the president said.
Obama said the world now faces a choice "between the forces that would drive us apart, and the hopes that we hold in common."
The last time Obama addressed the assembly, there was an air of hope surrounding the Arab Spring. U.S. officials remain optimistic, but some also worry that the latest unrest is perhaps the dark side of the revolution.
Obama used his U.N. address to urge leaders in the region not to let their hard-fought gains be undermined by those peddling the politics of hate and division.
The relationship between the Libya attack and the protests against an anti-Islam film elsewhere in the region remains unclear. Obama, in an interview on Monday, said the Libya attack was not just a "mob action." Other evidence has emerged indicating the attack was pre-planned, though the administration has not yet publicly drawn that conclusion.
The speech Tuesday morning kicked off a day heavy on foreign policy for both the president and Romney.
Romney addressed the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City in the morning, and Obama is expected to address the initiative later in the day.

Israel's security establishment and emergency services have been put on high alert Tuesday ahead of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
The IDF and Israel Police beefed up patrols in cities, and around synagogues, and officers were also stationed at the entrances to towns.
A comprehensive closure of West Bank border crossings went into effect on Monday night, and will continue until midnight on Wednesday. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said that individuals will be allowed to cross in cases of extreme medical or humanitarian emergency, subject to the approval of the Civil Administration.
Magen David Adom has reinforced its stations throughout the country with extra personnel on Yom Kippur in order to provide rapid medical care for cyclists and those fasting, should the need arise.
The fast will begin in Tel Aviv at 5:11 P.M., and end at 6:09 P.M. on Wednesday. In Jerusalem, the fast begins at 4:56 P.M., and will end at 6:07 P.M. on Wednesday.
In Be’er Sheva, fasting begins at 5:14 P.M., and ends at 6:09 P.M. In Haifa, the fast begins at 5:02 P.M, and ends at 6:08 P.M.

As the fast begins, synagogues throughout Israel will open their doors for “Kol Nidrei” prayers.

Syrian mortar shells land in northern Golan Heights

Numerous mortar shells fired by the Syrian army landed near Kibbutz Elrom in the northern Golahn Heights early Tuesday morning.
There were no casualties reported, and the Israel Defense Forces is investigating the incident. The shells were apparently fired at the Syrian village of Jubata Al Khashab, in response to Syrian rebel activity in the area.
A resident of the nearby village Majdal Shams told Haaretz that loud explosions were heard in the area overnight. “We heard the explosions, and I thought a shell had fallen on our side,” said the resident.
A similar incident occurred roughly two months ago, when a mortar shell landed to the east of the Druze village Mas’ada, in the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria, very close to the Israeli border. "It seems to be linked to the battle which began last Wednesday in the Syrian village of Jubata Al Khashab, between the Syrian army and the rebels," a Mas’ada resident told Haaretz.
Then, an IDF source said that the shelling was intended to hit the rebel forces, and it landed in the demilitarized zone is as a result of a miscalculation of the Syrian forces, who are located in a village not far from the border.
The source noted that in the next round between the army and the rebels, a mortar shell could easily land on the Israeli side of the border, adding that IDF soldiers stationed at the border are prepared for such possibility.

Why Men Look Angry and Women Look Happy

People are quicker tosee anger on men's faces and happiness on women's. Is this researchfinding  a simple case of genderstereotyping, or something more deeply rooted? When I was conducting researchon smiling my clients assumed that women always smiled more than men.Women do smile more than men, when they are in public. We like our women tosmile that makes all of us men and women feel safe. There are more interestinginsights in the following article by Beth Azar.
By Beth AzarApril 2007, Vol 38, No. 4
Print version: page 18

It might not be surprising thatpeople find it easier to see men as angry and women as happy. Women do tend tobe the nurturers and men--well--men do commit 80 to 90 percent of all violentcrimes. More surprising, perhaps, is new research suggesting that theconnection between men and anger and women and happiness goes deeper than thesesimple social stereotypes, regardless of how valid they are.
Our brains automatically link angerto men and happiness to women, even without the influence of genderstereotypes, indicate the findings of a series of experiments conducted bycognitive psychologist D. Vaughn Becker, PhD, of Arizona State University atthe Polytechnic Campus, with colleagues Douglas T. Kenrick, PhD, Steven L.Neuberg, PhD, K.C. Blackwell and Dylan Smith, PhD. They even turned it aroundto show that people are more likely to think a face is masculine if it's makingan angry expression and feminine if its expression is happy. In fact, theirresearch, published in February's Journal of Personality and SocialPsychology (Vol. 92, No. 2, pages 179-190), suggests that the cognitiveprocesses that distinguish male and female may be co-mingled with those thatdistinguish anger from happiness, thereby leading to this perceptual bias.
Becker proposes that this bias maystem from our evolutionary past, when an angry man would have been one of themost dangerous characters around, and a nurturing, happy female might have beenjust the person to protect you from harm. Evolutionary psychologist LedaCosmides, PhD, agrees.
"If it's more costly to make amistake of not recognizing an angry man, you would expect the [perceptual]threshold to be set lower than for recognizing an angry female," saysCosmides, of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).
More than a stereotype
Becker first noticed that peoplefind it easier to detect anger on men and happiness on women a couple years agowhile working on his dissertation at Arizona State. He was testing whetherviewing an angry or happy expression "primes" people to more quicklyidentify a subsequent angry or happy expression. Becker confirmed his initialhypothesis, but when he ran an additional analysis to test whether the genderof the person making the facial expression affected his results, he found thatgender was, by far, the biggest predictor of how quickly and accurately peopleidentified facial expressions.
Becker couldn't find any mention ofthis gender effect in the literature. So he set out to confirm that people morequickly link men to anger and women to happiness and figure out why that mightbe.
In the first of a series of studies,38 undergraduate participants viewed pictures of faces displaying prototypicalangry and happy expressions. They pressed "A" or "H" on acomputer keyboard to indicate whether the expression was angry or happy, andthe researchers recorded their reaction times. As expected, participants werequicker to label male faces "angry" and female faces"happy."
The researchers then used a versionof the "Implicit Association Test" to uncover unconscious biases thatstudy participants may have linking men to anger and women to happiness. Thewell-documented test allows researchers to examine the strength of connectionsbetween categories, which lead to unconscious stereotypes. Becker testedwhether study participants unconsciously linked male names with angry words andfemale names with happy words. Most did.
However, 13 students showed theopposite association (male-happy, female-angry), implying that theirunconscious gender stereotypes run counter to those of the general public. Itwas an ideal opportunity to determine whether gender stereotypes are at the heartof the emotion/gender bias. They weren't: Just like the main group ofparticipants, this subgroup more quickly and accurately categorized male facesas angry and female faces as happy.
"While gender stereotypesclearly influence perception, the implicit association test results made usthink the effect is not solely a function of stereotypes," says Becker.
Overlapping signals
Since gender stereotypes don't seemto be the culprit, Becker looked toward more deeply rooted causes.
For example, perhaps we see more menwith angry faces--on television, in movies--than we see women with angry faces,so our brains are well practiced at recognizing an angry expression on a man.To investigate this possibility, one of the co-authors, Arizona StateUniversity graduate student K.C. Blackwell, suggested they flip the experimentaround. Instead of asking people to identify facial expressions while theexperimenters manipulated gender, they asked them to identify whether a facewas male or female while manipulating facial expressions.
"While you can argue that themajority of angry faces we see are male, it's tough to argue that the majorityof male faces we see are angry," says Becker. So, if the relationshipbetween emotional expression and gender is simply a matter of how frequently wesee anger on men and happiness on women, the effect should disappear whenresearchers flip around the question. What they found, on the contrary, wasthat people were faster to identify angry faces as male and happy faces asfemale.
To follow-up on this finding, theyconducted another study in which they used computer graphics software tocontrol not only the intensity of facial expressions, but also the masculinityand femininity of the facial features, creating faces that were just slightlymasculine or feminine. As predicted, people were more likely to see the moremasculine faces as angrier, even when they had slightly happier expressionsthan the more feminine faces.
These findings suggest that thebrain begins to associate emotions and gender very early in the cognitiveprocess, says Becker. One possible explanation is that the brain has an"angry male detection module" enabling fast and accurate detection ofwhat would have been one of the most dangerous entities in our evolutionary past. But Becker thinks there's a more parsimonious explanation.
"I'm more inclined to thinkthat we've got a situation where the signals for facial expressions and thosefor masculinity and femininity have merged over time," he says.
In particular, features ofmasculinity --such as a heavy brow and angular face--somewhat overlap with theanger expression, and those of femininity--roundness and soft features--overlapwith the happiness expression.
To test this hypothesis, Becker andhis colleagues used computer animation software to individually manipulatemasculine and feminine facial features of expressively neutral faces. Aspredicted, a heavier brow caused participants to see faces as both moremasculine and more angry, implying that the mental processes for determiningmasculinity and anger may be intertwined.
"These results make a lot ofsense," says University of Pittsburgh behavioral anthropologist and facialexpression researcher Karen Schmidt, PhD. "Faces have always had gender,so if we're always activating gender and affect at the same time then theprocessing is likely highly coordinated."
The paper raises new and interestingquestions about gender, says UCSB postdoctoral student Aaron Sell, PhD, whostudies the evolution of gender. "Specifically," he says, "whydo male and female faces differ, and what is the nature of emotiondetection?"
The data appear to suggest that theanger expression has evolved to make a face seem more masculine, says Sell.Even female faces may communicate anger more effectively the more masculinethey appear, says Becker. Future studies will have to tackle questions aboutthe intentions expressed by the angry face and why looking more male would bean evolutionary advantage in communicating these intentions.

"I see this article as openingthe book on a new research topic more than having the final say on theissue," says Sell.Beth Azar is a writer in Portland,Ore.

Cost of Anger in the Workplace

Joe, a participant in my workshop, was upset when he came in thismorning and in the first exercise shared his frustration. “I don’t understandwhy I was sent to this interpersonal skills workshop. I am a great manager. Iam at work before everybody and I am the last one to leave. I walk around Itell my employees over and over again what they need to do to complete theirwork. I am there for them. I have an open door policy. They can talk to meanytime they want. But, everyone is walking around tense and they don’t dotheir work. Joe’s classmates that day already knew what could be the problem.Joe was yelling out his frustration and gesturing at us with his fist. Theywere scared of him. Joe needed to see how his behavior was affecting his bodylanguage and his health and his anger's impact on everyone he worked with.

”Workplace anger is costly to the employee, the company, and coworkers.Studies show that up to 42% of employee time is spent engaging in or trying toresolve conflict.  This results in wastedemployee time, mistakes, stress, lower morale, hampered performance, andreduced profits and or service.

In 1993 the national Safe Workplace Institute released a study showingthat workplace violence costs $4.2 billion each year, estimating over 111,000violent incidents. Further, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 500,000 victims of violent crime in the workplace lose an estimated 1.8million workdays each year.

Clearly, poorly handled anger, frustration and resentment will sabotagebusiness productivity.

One solution for your workplace anger is to “Check In” on your behavior.Anger can be recognized by certain facial and body language cues. Notice whatyou are showing about your behavior.
