What to Look for in Tonight’s Vice Presidential Debate, Words and Body Language

NBC news has this article on what to look for in tonight’svice presidential debates. Of course, I will be looking at the body language aswell. After the presidential debate last week I will be particularlyinterested to see how Vice President Biden, who is known for wining debates easily,will look up against the young whippersnapper, Ryan, who has never debated asthe article says, “…the entire nation watching.” Will Ryan know, as Biden does,to look at the camera as if it is a person? Biden won the Vice Presidential Debates with Ryan byUsing Bully Body Language. Body Language Expert's insights on the debates: Vice President Biden won the debate with Ryan by using bully body language. Biden’s strong, low baritone voice made himappear authoritative. His large and often downward sweeping gestures as well as his use offist and holding a weapon like pen in his hand made him look like he was beating Congressman Ryandown. In addition his looks of derision, disrespect sneering, smiling andshaking his head and rolling his eyes up , and later in the debate openhostility as he responded to Ryan’s answers, as well as Biden’s lack of eye contact with Ryan made him looklike he was stronger and energetic. If you look at my blog on what I waslooking for I was interested to see how Biden would deal with the agedifference. Energy and fierceness were his techniques. Democratswere eager for Biden to show the spark of energy and passion the presidentlacked, he did so.
Though many times he was rude, disrespectful andinterrupted. The way he looked at Ryan with disbelief of hisfoolishness. Romney won the last debatebeing stronger, louder and longer, interrupting and more passionate. Biden is winning so far using Romney’s technique.
Ryan’s answers were steady and fact filled. His pulled back body language may appeal to the conservative right. Idid like Ryan’s verbal response later in the debate to all the interruptions“I know you’re under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground, but I thinkpeople would be better served if we don’t interrupt each other,” But, nonverballyRyan should have said this earlier (timing is nonverbal communicator) and perhaps if he had said it earlier and a bitmore playfully it could have worked. But Biden was roaring by then so Ryanended up sounding and looking like he was the nerd that was getting beatup by the bully standing with a bloody nose and trying to appeal to the bully'slogic. We did feel sorry for Ryan we sawhim as by far the nicer person, but he was rolled over by Biden.
Here are my rough notes from the beginning
Ryan walked toward Biden and did the politician handshake.
Ryan took a sip of water to start.
Biden on first question flat suppressed he was smilingbefore the question.
Biden had a strong opening and said, "We will find whoever did this.. "while pointing holding pen.

Ryan’s voice (paralanguage) is higher, squeaky and less“presidential” so when he said, “we mournthe loss of …” sounded less powerful.
As he said, ‘We owe a great debt of gratitude to ourveterans” Ryan had great vocal emphasison the word great. His paralanguage and facial expression were in synch the statement waswarm wonderful and powerful.
Ryan’s downward pinch gesture not strong enough whentalking about deaths at embassy.
Ryan’s response to question about soldiers burning andurinating - He hesitated vocally and did not answer strongly and forcefully. Hisbody didn’t go forward nor did he gesture strongly enough. I think the wordurinate affected his ability to repeat the question. (a technique to respondin debates to give him time.)
Ryan, now he is stronger on watered down sanctions.

Biden gave strong downward striking gesture, What the Iatolasees. We will not allow the

Ryan is looking at Biden with interest he is taking notes (or faking notes)

He is leaning forward Biden is moving. He is more forwardand certain in his response to question about Jobs.
Ryan does not respond well to Bidens interruption of hiscomment about jobs. Ryan pulls his headback, mouth goes puckered and nose wrinkles and sniffs. His pinched point down gesture again is notpowerful enough.
Ryan is doing the same pointed gesture. It fits him but itis not strong enough to us visually.
Biden as he says, “Any senior out there" Biden looks directly at thecamera and reaches out and gestures to them. (places the grey hair to dark hairin debaters)
Also plays to camera using his favorite phrase, “Folkslisten.”
“Mr. Vice President, Mr. Vice President", Ryan looked directlyat Biden, his eyebrows furrowed in anger, he gestured in attack, but his voicewas not strong enough. Ryan’s gestureand forward movement was not strong enough. He actually honored and respected Biden, just a bit too much. Howinteresting.
Tax cuts –
When Ryan tries to take on Biden directly talking Kennedyhere he does not win.
By the way the moderator is doing a really great job here.Love how strong she looks. She leans in and raises her voice.
Ryan does a good job here initially as he answersthe question. But look at his hands when Biden responds and disagrees with him.Ryan pulls inward and gets smaller. Look as he goes still he holds his hands ina formal hands resting pointed towards each other on the table. That is acentering formal hand position. Again probably coached, but I would havecoached him to spread his hands slightly so he looks centered but stronger. Not looking “smaller” compared to Biden. Ryan is again being respectful. He has towalk a fine line. This makes his job harder.
Ohh finally Ryan is looking at Biden as he talks but now hisexpression has changed. He frowns and brings his head down slightly in a freezeframe of head shake now.
Taliban,
Biden does his first raised arms up and folds his handstogether. This move shows he feels the need to pull back on his internal desireto attack. But interesting as he raises his arms and folds he strikesmomentarily at Martha the moderator.
Fighting Season, Warm months.
One of the big if not the biggest moment in the debate, theBig moment, that will be in the headlines tomorrow when anyone discusses thevice presidential debate. Big battle about Afghan troops replacing our troops.Most real anger if you look at micro facial cues (I see when I look at videoyou see Biden snarl and bar his teeth as seen in any political debate.)
I am noticing that I am disconnected. I want to stop payingattention when Ryan gives his long answers without enough vocal variation andnot enough movement.
Faith, Abortion. Ryan delivers the Bean (his first baby)story very well. He gets to smile he gets to look warm and emotional as hetalks about his daughter.
Biden, “My religion defines who I am.” First time he getschoked up for the first time. We hear the stress in his voice. His voice goes into a stage whisper.
Ryan abortion. Catholic church. When Biden interrupts him Ryan thrust out his tongue,straight out and full. His head movesafter. He is ruffled. Ryan does not hold his ground nonverbally.
Biden, “ We only have one true sacred obligation…”
Biden’s only really big smile(in derision) that I havenoticed thus far in the debate is as he discusses the “scurrilous..” big moneydoing scurrilous things in the campaign. Interesting.
Ryan at 10:00 is giving a really strong close. He is finallymaking intense focused eye contact with the Moderator. I would like him to giveto the camera.
Biden’s near close showing voice strain and face and bodyshows exhaustion gestures getting smaller. Body gets smaller and more still.
Ryan’s response to question to How you would as a humanbeing is
We believe you grow the country with the middle class hedoes a fantastic illustrator gesture as he says. “Middle out top down.”

Most obviously on his lastline. Looked weak and insincere. If you were just listening not watching hisbody language it would have seemed strong.

Another big video slice that will bediscussed in the news. One small thing. Ryan’s little boy not going up out ofthe chair when Ryan pulls him. Ryan’sson not quickly looking at his father as he approached. Instead stayinghunkered down in the chair and smiling to the cameras, makes Ryan look lesspowerful than his little boy. I amappalled at this behavior in his son. I think viewers might ask what is this?How can a child being so attentionseeking and disrespectful. Obama’sdaughter did this at the Democratic convention, now this. If a president and avice presidential candidate can’t get respect and attention from theirchildren what hope do we have in their abllity to lead us or hold or gainour respect.

Secret Service agent arrested in Miami after passing out drunk on a sidewalk

The Secret Service has another embarrassment on its hands after one of its agents was found passed out on a Miami sidewalk and arrested — just hours after President Obama left town.
Aaron Francis Engler was found early Friday morning by Miami police officers who were responding to an unrelated call, CBS Miami reported.
When they tried to stir the sleeping Secret Service man, he allegedly got belligerent, forcing the officers to take him down.
They didn't know they were dealing with one of the President's men until the uncooperative agent was in handcuffs and they found his ID in a pocket, CBS Miami said it learned from a police report. He wasn't armed at the time of his arrest.
Engler told police he was part of President Obama's advance team for his visit to the city on Thursday, law enforcement sources told the station.
He allegedly began partying after the president left Miami, but the arrest prevented him from leaving town for another assignment Friday morning, the sources said.
Engler was charged with two misdemeanors, disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest without violence.
He was turned over to the Secret Service, which was taking him back to Washington.
The latest embarrassing incident follows another Secret Service scandal in April, when a dozen agents were disciplined — with most losing their jobs — after a wild night of partying with Colombian prostitutes.

A gun-smuggler who will be eligible to collect Social Security next month when he turns 65 was among 13 suspects arrested for running two weapons-trafficking networks in Harlem that sold 129 illegal firearms and more than 1,000 rounds of ammo, authorities announced today.
Over the past two days, cops also seized more than 100 guns during takedowns and nine search warrant executions as part of the sting. Three suspects remain at large.
“There’s an awful lot of firepower here that can kill a lot of people,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, joined by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance.
"Every child on every block in every neighborhood in this city has the right to walk to school without the fear of being shot," Vance said.
Among those collared was Mitchell “Mickey” Collins, 64, who has a record dating back to 1968 that includes attempted murder and weapons possession, Kelly said.
"Getting close to the wily Mickey Collins was no easy matter," Kelly said. "He waited for months before agreeing to meet with the undercover officer and even longer before he would agree to sell him more than one gun at a time."
He, along with three cohorts, eventually peddled 88 guns to the undercover cop — including an AK-47 that fetched $1,600 and a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson that went for $400, Kelly added.
One accomplice, Sampson Taylor, 34, would allegedly take a bus to South Carolina, stock up on firepower at pawn shops and gun dealers and then ferret the illicit arsenal back to the city, where weapons sold for 100 percent profit.
Collins, Sampson and two pals were busted in an operation dubbed “Mickey Mouse Trap” that began in May 2011, Kelly said.
Another lengthy sting, called “Operation Carver,” started in November 2011 and targeted four gangs comprising perps ranging in age from 17 to 23, Kelly added.
Those crews allegedly sold 41 guns and a bulletproof vest to an undercover officer.
Two of the weapons sold were used in prior shootings: one in the Bronx in 2003, and another in a gunfight last year in the Cypress Houses in Brooklyn, authorities said.
Victims in both shootings refused to cooperate with investigators.

Over the past two days, cops also seized more than 100 guns during takedowns and nine search warrant executions as part of the sting. Three suspects remain at large.
“There’s an awful lot of firepower here that can kill a lot of people,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, joined by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance.
"Every child on every block in every neighborhood in this city has the right to walk to school without the fear of being shot," Vance said.
Among those collared was Mitchell “Mickey” Collins, 64, who has a record dating back to 1968 that includes attempted murder and weapons possession, Kelly said.
"Getting close to the wily Mickey Collins was no easy matter," Kelly said. "He waited for months before agreeing to meet with the undercover officer and even longer before he would agree to sell him more than one gun at a time."
He, along with three cohorts, eventually peddled 88 guns to the undercover cop — including an AK-47 that fetched $1,600 and a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson that went for $400, Kelly added.
One accomplice, Sampson Taylor, 34, would allegedly take a bus to South Carolina, stock up on firepower at pawn shops and gun dealers and then ferret the illicit arsenal back to the city, where weapons sold for 100 percent profit.
Collins, Sampson and two pals were busted in an operation dubbed “Mickey Mouse Trap” that began in May 2011, Kelly said.
Another lengthy sting, called “Operation Carver,” started in November 2011 and targeted four gangs comprising perps ranging in age from 17 to 23, Kelly added.
Those crews allegedly sold 41 guns and a bulletproof vest to an undercover officer.
Two of the weapons sold were used in prior shootings: one in the Bronx in 2003, and another in a gunfight last year in the Cypress Houses in Brooklyn, authorities said.
Victims in both shootings refused to cooperate with investigators.

Several Jewish organizations and three rabbis filed suit today against the New York City Department of Health (DOH) seeking an injunction against regulations that would illegally inhibit and unfairly criticize a form of circumcision that has been safely practiced by Jewish people across the world for thousands of years.
The suit argues that the DOH is attempting to discourage the practice known as metzitzah b’peh (MBP) by requiring all rabbis who perform the ritual, referred to as mohelim, to distribute a form stating that MBP can lead to serious health risks. That regulation violates both the rights to free speech and freedom of religion.
“Not only is the Department of Health wrong about metzitzah b’peh, it is trying to enforce its erroneous opinions on the people of New York City,” said Hank Sheinkopf, spokesperson for the group.
“By essentially starting a public intimidation campaign that forces private citizens to spread the government’s beliefs, they are shaking the core of our democracy. We believe the courts will stop this overzealous government overreach and keep them out of our speech and religion.”
The suit argues that “the government cannot compel the transmission of messages that the speaker does not want to express—especially when the speaker is operating in an area of heightened First Amendment protection, such as a religious ritual.”
The lawsuit is supported by affidavits from experts in infectious diseases, epidemiology and statistical analysis that question the assessment and methodology of the DOH in forming its opinion about the safety of MBP.
The suit was filed in federal court in Manhattan and asks to stop the DOH from implementing its regulation. The organizational plaintiffs are the international Bris Association, Agudath Israel of America, the Central Rabbinical Congress of the United States & Canada; the mohel plaintiffs are Rabbi Samuel Blum, Rabbi Aharon Leiman and Rabbi Shloime Eichenstein.
As the suit states on the DOH’s own theory, there have been eighty-four cases of HSV reported in infants over the past five years, and 79 of those cases arose in females, uncircumcised males or males whose circumcision did not include MBP. Yet the few cases that might possibly have arisen after MBP have been the sole focus of the Department’s regulatory attention, leaving entirely unaddressed the other risks of HSV which accounts for well over 90% of reported cases. After correcting for the Department’s methodological errors, these expert affidavits demonstrated that HSV arises no more frequently after MBP than it does in newborns who did not receive MBP.

A CREEP thief snuck into a church and stole a couples wedding clothes and jewelry on the night before their big day.
Caty and Jack Parker had been rehearsing the ceremony in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, WA when the thin, female burglar struck.
When they returned to their dressing room they found the bride’s bag, shoes and jewellery and the groom’s wedding ring were missing.
It contained Caty’s family heirloom jewellery was gone – but luckily her wedding dress had not been taken.
She told King 5:"I was devastated at that moment. It took me a while to realize it’s not the stuff that is important it's who you marry."
Jack added: "Pretty much everything got stolen – except for her dress – that she needed for the next day."
Thankfully the couple managed to replace the stolen goods before their nuptials.
But the thief went onto use their stolen ATM cards, in total charging $600 to their accounts.
Dressed all in black, was caught on surveillance camera lurking in the corridors of the Holy Trinity Lutheran church before she robbed the bridal party.
Now the Parkers hope someone will be able to identify the woman, who is slight and wire a pony tail.
Jack explained: "She walked out with three or four bags. She just went in and snatched it and walked out the door like nothing happened.
"She walked out there and we think she might have had a car out there."
The newlyweds added that they hope the woman gets the help she needs.
Cops are investigating.

A TWISTED killer snapped pictures of his young victims before running errands with the female corpse in the trunk of his car.
Craig Lede allegedly beat Dana Nelson, 28, and John Ketsemidis, 29, over a drug debt of just $40.
It's thought all three were hooked on prescription drugs, which were linked to a pill clinic which has recently closed.
Lede told cops he killed the couple because he was tired of being "screwed about" over a small debt, so he'd killed the pair.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis told Bay News 9 that Ketsemidis and Nelson had gone to Lede’s home to talk about their debt when he attacked them with a bat.
According to the arrest warrant: "Once the victims were down and helpless, the defendant struck them in the head and upper body several times causing eventual death."
After taking the sick pictures, he stuffed Nelson's body into the trunk of her boyfriend's car and went to Ketsemidis' parents home where he demanded $40.
They refused to hand over the cash and called cops, when they saw he was driving his son's car.

A 47-year-old former Wall Street trader who said he spent over $65,000 on professional matchmaking services over the past 12 years in a dead-end quest to find a wife, and publicly slammed the matchmakers, is now coming under fire.
One of the matchmakers Greenfield used is pushing back, saying the multimillionaire from Long Island, N.Y., was “too picky” and wanted women who were simply out of his league.
The New York Post reported Monday that Greenfield, who retired from Opus Trading in Oct. 2011, used six different matchmaking services and went on 250 dates with women in the last 12 years, but still hasn’t found a wife.
His ideal woman is attractive, thin, Jewish and has a sense of humor, according to The Post, but is not an “alpha” who’s career-obsessed. He wants someone to start a family with.
Greenfield, who could not be reached for comment, reportedly deemed all of the women he dated unsatisfactory, calling the matchmaking services a “rip-off” that over promised and under delivered.
“You pay them up front and they don’t provide a service. They tell you how wonderful you are, whatever you want to hear,” Greenfield told The Post.
Long Island-based matchmaker Maureen Tara Nelson of Maureen Tara Nelson Private Matchmaking Inc., who worked with Greenfield in 2009, said he was one of her “pickiest client ever.”
“It was, ‘She was too this. She was too that. I didn’t feel the chemistry,’” Nelson recalled.
The professional matchmaker said she set him up with a handful of women, all of whom fit his criteria, but he was “totally unrealistic” and called a beautiful woman “terrible.”
“You can’t say just because you have money that you deserve someone beautiful. I don’t have gold-diggers in my program. Women are financially stable as well,” Nelson said. “The girl that he said was terrible is married to a pharmacist right now.”
Nelson said upon meeting Greenfield she advised him to choose a more substantial program that included more matches, meet-and-greet parties and coaching, but he insisted on a less-expensive program.
After around five matches, Nelson said Greenfield approached her with an unconventional proposal: instead of paying upfront for her services as other clients did, he offered to pay $20,000 if Nelson introduced her to the women he would marry. Nelson provided ABC News with a letter reportedly delivered to her by Greenfield in March 2009.
“I accepted that and worked for six months trying to do it this way,” Nelson said. “I really wanted to help him …. but… he was too picky. After six months, I said I can’t do this.”
“What we all did was try to help him and he’s taking the easy way out blaming us. That’s just not right,” she added.
Nelson said she’d be willing to work with Greenfield again — only if he choose the appropriate program this time around — her Elite package, which would cost him $4,995.
Matchmaker Janis Spindel of Serious Matchmaking , who has spoken with Greenfield about what he’s looking for in a wife but hasn’t formally become his matchmaker, said he’s a “great guy” that’s no pickier than any other men out there.
“Men are picky. It’s in their DNA. They want the four B’s — beauty, brains, body and balance,” Spindel said, adding Greenfield is no different. “Larry wants a normal girl who’s in her thirties who wants to be his wife, who will be a sweet and loving wife and mom. …. I told him I will not take money from him until I have her.”

The New York Post reported Monday that Greenfield, who retired from Opus Trading in Oct. 2011, used six different matchmaking services and went on 250 dates with women in the last 12 years, but still hasn’t found a wife.
His ideal woman is attractive, thin, Jewish and has a sense of humor, according to The Post, but is not an “alpha” who’s career-obsessed. He wants someone to start a family with.
Greenfield, who could not be reached for comment, reportedly deemed all of the women he dated unsatisfactory, calling the matchmaking services a “rip-off” that over promised and under delivered.
“You pay them up front and they don’t provide a service. They tell you how wonderful you are, whatever you want to hear,” Greenfield told The Post.
Long Island-based matchmaker Maureen Tara Nelson of Maureen Tara Nelson Private Matchmaking Inc., who worked with Greenfield in 2009, said he was one of her “pickiest client ever.”
“It was, ‘She was too this. She was too that. I didn’t feel the chemistry,’” Nelson recalled.
The professional matchmaker said she set him up with a handful of women, all of whom fit his criteria, but he was “totally unrealistic” and called a beautiful woman “terrible.”
“You can’t say just because you have money that you deserve someone beautiful. I don’t have gold-diggers in my program. Women are financially stable as well,” Nelson said. “The girl that he said was terrible is married to a pharmacist right now.”
Nelson said upon meeting Greenfield she advised him to choose a more substantial program that included more matches, meet-and-greet parties and coaching, but he insisted on a less-expensive program.
After around five matches, Nelson said Greenfield approached her with an unconventional proposal: instead of paying upfront for her services as other clients did, he offered to pay $20,000 if Nelson introduced her to the women he would marry. Nelson provided ABC News with a letter reportedly delivered to her by Greenfield in March 2009.
“I accepted that and worked for six months trying to do it this way,” Nelson said. “I really wanted to help him …. but… he was too picky. After six months, I said I can’t do this.”
“What we all did was try to help him and he’s taking the easy way out blaming us. That’s just not right,” she added.
Nelson said she’d be willing to work with Greenfield again — only if he choose the appropriate program this time around — her Elite package, which would cost him $4,995.
Matchmaker Janis Spindel of Serious Matchmaking , who has spoken with Greenfield about what he’s looking for in a wife but hasn’t formally become his matchmaker, said he’s a “great guy” that’s no pickier than any other men out there.
“Men are picky. It’s in their DNA. They want the four B’s — beauty, brains, body and balance,” Spindel said, adding Greenfield is no different. “Larry wants a normal girl who’s in her thirties who wants to be his wife, who will be a sweet and loving wife and mom. …. I told him I will not take money from him until I have her.”

Solomon Dwek is mentally ill, his attorney claims, in a bid seeking leniency for the key informant behind New Jersey’s biggest-ever corruption sting.
In a federal court filing that included a clinical diagnosis of bipolar disorder and chronic high anxiety — as well as letters of support from Dwek’s family and friends —attorneys for the former real estate investor are looking to minimize the prison term he faces for bank fraud under the terms of a plea deal with the government.
Both the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Dwek’s attorney declined comment on the defense motion. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Dwek is currently facing a prison term of nine-to-11 years.
Federal prosecutors are expected, however, to also move for a reduced sentence, based on Dwek’s cooperation, according to the motion.
Dwek — who just turned 40 — spent three years wearing a wire for the FBI as part of a sweeping corruption and money-laundering investigation that led to the arrests of dozens of elected officials, five Orthodox rabbis, and a black market kidney broker.
He is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Jose Linares in Newark on Oct. 18 to be sentenced for his role in an unrelated $50 million bank fraud that first led to his cooperation with the government. He also faces sentencing in Superior Court in Monmouth County the next day, on separate charges involving fraudulent bank loans tied to a Manhattan real estate scam that never materialized.
Now being held in the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, Dwek has been jailed since June 2011, after his bail was revoked for lying to the FBI about a rental car he did not return on time, leading to car theft charges in Maryland, where his family now lives. That case was later dropped by prosecutors there.
The 94-page filing by Dwek’s attorney, Charles Uliano of West Long Branch, filed late Friday, said Dwek had a history of serious mental disorders. Jerome Rubin, a clinical psychologist retained by Dwek’s defense attorneys, concluded that he suffered from multiple mental illnesses, with a primary diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
"Before incarceration, his bipolar condition was characterized as having a very high energy output, mental excitement, racing thoughts, irritability, illusory thinking, efforts to engage in multiple activities at the same time, poor insight and inability to foresee consequences," Rubin wrote. "In my professional opinion, his criminal behavior was related to his chronic mental disorders."
He said Dwek had problems with high anxiety, struggling "with the rigor and intensity of his religious training, and turned to real estate as an escape.
"He began getting into the next business deal without regard to real estate costs, problems of development, rehabilitation, financing and sales," said Rubin. "For Mr. Dwek, buying and selling became the main source of psychological reward for him."
A well-known real estate investor in Monmouth and Ocean counties, Dwek was arrested in 2006 after he deposited a worthless $25 million check at a PNC Bank drive-through window in Eatontown and immediately wired out all the money. Then he tried to do it again the next day.
At first, it was thought Dwek was covering investments that had gone sour. But court documents later revealed that he had been running a wide-ranging, $400 million real estate Ponzi scheme before ultimately running out of new investors. Caught short of badly needed cash, he tried kiting the two fraudulent checks to cover his outstanding loans.
Following his arrest, Dwek secretly entered into a deal to cooperate with the U.S. attorney and became an undercover informant in a long-running corruption and money-laundering sting known as Bid Rig III that targeted politicians, candidates for office, religious figures in his Orthodox community, and ultimately a man who arranged black market kidney transplants.
The two-tier investigation, originally green-lighted by then-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, saw Dwek posing as a corrupt developer, offering cash bribes to dozens of elected officials and candidates for office to expedite phony real estate projects.
At the same time, he set up former business partners, rabbis and others who helped him launder millions more through religious charities and organizations.
The sting came to light in July 2009 in a series of high-profile arrests, bringing charges against three mayors, two legislators, five Orthodox rabbis and dozens of others. Dwek’s role in the case and his cooperation deal quickly became public, and he pleaded guilty to the bank fraud and loan scam in October 2009.
In the defense filing, Rubin said that psychological testing and clinical interviews indicate that Dwek has symptoms of both bipolar and anxiety disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis for a mood disorder which causes disruptive mood swings, including a frenzied state known as mania and, often, symptoms of depression.
The issue could impact on appeals in other cases related to the Bid Rig investigation. Attorneys for several of those pulled into the sting complained during trial that Dwek’s non-stop patter and efforts to talk over others was nothing more than entrapment, by someone trying to buy his way out of trouble.
The psychologist, who visited Dwek in prison in August 2011, said he is now on psychotropic medication and a candidate for rehabilitation.
Included in the court filing were letters and testimonials from the few friends Dwek now seems to have, as well as from his wife, Pearl and two of his six children.
Several letters of support also came from his rabbi in Baltimore — who is nearly alone in the religious community in providing any sort of support to the family, which has been ostracized from the Syrian Sephardic enclave in Deal where Dwek, himself the son of a noted rabbi, once made his home.
Pearl Dwek, in an emotional letter to Linares, spoke to the support she once had from her husband, and the pain of being excommunicated from her Orthodox community and cut off by her parents.
"My family has been broken by his experience," she said. " I cling to my children now and wait for my husband to return to help me with raising them as we promised one another when we married.
She said Dwek’s father was forced to leave his synagogue in Deal, and she feels shunned by her own family.
"I know Solomon fell under the drug of real estate deals and gave into the pressure of trying to be a hero to so many," she wrote.
Dwek’s eldest daughter, Raizel — named for her grandmother — asked Linares to send her father back home.
"I have seen family members I love and once depended on, shun us. And the community each one of us described as home become a place where we are no longer welcome," she said. "I miss my father and I ask, for the sake of our family, that you send him back to us soon."
Rabbi Aaron Tendler, who took the family under his wing in Baltimore, also sought mercy for Dwek. He said the Jewish community in the Baltimore area has not been kind to Dwek or the family, shunning him as an informer.
"His children have been expelled from the Jewish schools they were originally accepted in," he said. "I personally have been ostracized and threatened with dismissal from my job for welcoming the Dwek family into our community."
Tendler said Dwek and his family have already been punished and have been unable to live normal lives due to his misdeeds.
Dwek’s sentencing has been repeatedly delayed for well over a year, while other cases were resolved through the courts. Of the 46 people who have been charged in the case, 32 have pleaded guilty, four were convicted, two were acquitted, one died, and charges were dropped against four.
Dwek, as part of his separate plea with the state, was promised that prosecutors would not seek more than four years behind bars, to be served concurrently with any federal sentence.
Federal prosecutors have not indicated what they will ask, but will acknowledge his cooperation with the government and ask Linares to take note of that.
The last time Dwek was in Linares’s courtroom, the judge showed little patience for him, in the wake of unexpected disclosures that he had lied to the FBI on the eve of trial against one of those caught up in the sting, former Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell.
Revoking Dwek’s bail over the objections of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Linares called him "consummate defrauder and an extremely cunning liar."

One of four black men wrongly accused of raping and pimping a troubled young Orthodox Jewish woman has sued the city and Brooklyn district attorney’s office for malicious prosecution, defamation and false imprisonment.
The suit, which seeks unspecified money damages, was filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court on behalf of Darrell Dula, who with his three co-defendants had been publicly pilloried by DA Charles Hynes at a press conference announcing the case in June 2011.
Hynes had called all four men “low lives” in front of reporters, claiming they’d forced the young woman into prostituting herself for eight years, starting when she was 13.
“It’s one of the sickest cases I’ve ever seen,” the veteran prosecutor had enthused.
Dula would spend 10 months in jail — with the threat of as much as 25 years prison over his head — before the sensational sex slave charges were dismissed this summer.
“At the press conference they made awful allegations against him,” well beyond the rape charges in the indictment, said Dula lawyer Eric Siegle.
“They told reporters that Mr. Dula had been involved in sex trafficking, and had threatened the woman’s family members,” added co-counsel Jonathan Sims.
Hynes and lead prosecutor Lauren Hersh proceeded with the prosecution despite knowing that a year prior, the woman had brought similar allegations to NYPD sex crimes detectives, only to change her mind and recant within hours.
Months after the charges were dropped, Hersh resigned from the helm of the DA’s new sex trafficking unit, for which the sex slave indictments had been heralded as a first big case.
“Defendants were aware that the alleged rape victim recanted her rape allegations against Dula prior to arresting and charging Dula with Rape in the First Degree,” according to the lawsuit.

Rabbi of "Ground Zero Synagogue" Passes Away

The rabbi of a house of worship known as “the ground zero synagogue” has died.
The Wall Street Synagogue said in a brief statement that Rabbi Meyer Hager died on Sunday at New York University Medical Center.
His age and cause of death were not given.
A funeral will be held at the Beekman Street synagogue Wednesday afternoon.
Hager served at the synagogue for more than 50 years.
The synagogue is next to Engine Six, which lost four firefighters at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

DEADLY Dutchman Joran Van Der Sloot is rubbing salt in the already deep wounds by launching an astonishing $10 million lawsuit against his victim's father.
The shameless accused killer, who allgedly admitted to cops that he killed Peruvian student Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room is claiming his human rights were violated when he was extradited from Peru to Chile, to face murder charges.
He reportedly confessed to killing the 21-year-old after he found her reading about the Natalee Holloway case on his laptop.
He has long been prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of the pretty American teenager, who vanished on the small Caribbean island of Aruba where she was celebrating her graduation.
Peruvian prosecutors however maintain that he planned to kill Flores, so he could rob her.
Now according to El Commercio he's claiming his arrest in Chile and subsequent extradition to Peru was a violation of human rights.
According to the Lima daily El Comercio, van der Sloot claims there was pressure from Peru's then-President Alan GarcÃa Pérez on the Chilean government to extradite after he was arrested in Arica, Chile shortly after Flores was killed.
Several other Peruvian officials are named in the lawsuit, along with the murdered girl's father, Ricardo Flores.
It's not the first time the Van der Sloot has raised the same issues of due process and police irregularities, but all his claims that have been dismissed by Peruvian courts.

A CREEP thief snuck into a church and stole a couples wedding clothes and jewelry on the night before their big day.
Caty and Jack Parker had been rehearsing the ceremony in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, WA when the thin, female burglar struck.
When they returned to their dressing room they found the bride’s bag, shoes and jewellery and the groom’s wedding ring were missing.

A TWISTED killer snapped pictures of his young victims before running errands with the female corpse in the trunk of his car.
Craig Lede allegedly beat Dana Nelson, 28, and John Ketsemidis, 29, over a drug debt of just $40.
It's thought all three were hooked on prescription drugs, which were linked to a pill clinic which has recently closed.
Lede told cops he killed the couple because he was tired of being "screwed about" over a small debt, so he'd killed the pair.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis told Bay News 9 that Ketsemidis and Nelson had gone to Lede’s home to talk about their debt when he attacked them with a bat.

The shameless accused killer, who allgedly admitted to cops that he killed Peruvian student Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room is claiming his human rights were violated when he was extradited from Peru to Chile, to face murder charges.
He reportedly confessed to killing the 21-year-old after he found her reading about the Natalee Holloway case on his laptop.
He has long been prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of the pretty American teenager, who vanished on the small Caribbean island of Aruba where she was celebrating her graduation.
Peruvian prosecutors however maintain that he planned to kill Flores, so he could rob her.
Now according to El Commercio he's claiming his arrest in Chile and subsequent extradition to Peru was a violation of human rights.
According to the Lima daily El Comercio, van der Sloot claims there was pressure from Peru's then-President Alan GarcÃa Pérez on the Chilean government to extradite after he was arrested in Arica, Chile shortly after Flores was killed.
Several other Peruvian officials are named in the lawsuit, along with the murdered girl's father, Ricardo Flores.
It's not the first time the Van der Sloot has raised the same issues of due process and police irregularities, but all his claims that have been dismissed by Peruvian courts.
